After Midnight in Manila

The rain came down hard over Manila, turning the city lights outside the condo windows into streaks of gold and red.

Mara stood by the balcony door wearing an oversized white polo, her dark hair still damp from the rain. At twenty-seven, she knew exactly what she was doing when she caught Adrian staring.

“May problema?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Wala,” Adrian replied. “Tumingin lang.”

“Ang tagal mong tumingin.”

She walked closer.

Adrian had known her for years, but tonight felt different. Maybe it was the late hour. Maybe it was the bottle of wine sitting unfinished on the kitchen counter. Or maybe it was the way Mara stopped inches away from him, close enough that he caught the faint scent of her perfume.

“Still just looking?” she whispered.

His hand settled carefully at her waist.

Mara glanced down at it, then back into his eyes.

She didn’t move away.

Instead, she caught the collar of his shirt and pulled him closer.

Their first kiss was slow, almost cautious. The second wasn’t.

Outside, thunder rolled across the city as Mara pressed him back against the wall, smiling against his lips when she felt his surprise.

“Akala mo mahiyain ako?” she murmured.

“Hindi na.”

“Good.”

She kissed him again, fingers sliding into his hair as his arms wrapped around her. For several breathless moments, the years of teasing, stolen glances, and things neither of them had dared say disappeared.

There was only the rain.

The warmth between them.

And Mara whispering against his ear—

“Lock the door.”
