The Phone Call at Midnight

Ethan lived alone in a small apartment on the fifth floor of an old building. His life was simple—work during the day, dinner in front of the TV at night, and sleep before midnight. Nothing exciting ever happened, and that was exactly how he liked it.
Until the phone started ringing.
One Tuesday night, at exactly 12:00 a.m., his phone buzzed on the bedside table. Half-asleep, Ethan reached for it and looked at the screen.
Unknown Number
He frowned. Who would call at midnight? Thinking it might be an emergency, he answered.
“Hello?”
There was silence.
Then, very faintly, he heard breathing.
“Hello?” he repeated, sitting up now.
The line suddenly went dead.
Ethan shrugged it off and went back to sleep, telling himself it was probably a wrong number. But the next night, at exactly 12:00 a.m., the phone rang again.
Same unknown number.
This time, he hesitated before answering.
“Who is this?” he asked firmly.
Again, silence.
Then a soft whisper:
“Don’t forget…”
The call ended.
A chill ran down Ethan’s spine.
The next morning, he checked his call history, but the number didn’t appear. It was as if the call had never happened. He asked his friends about it at work, but they laughed and said it was probably a phone glitch.
Still, the words stayed in his mind.
Don’t forget.
On the third night, Ethan decided to stay awake. He made coffee and sat on the couch, staring at his phone. The clock on the wall ticked slowly.
11:59 p.m.
His heart started pounding.
12:00 a.m.
The phone rang.
This time, he answered immediately.
“Stop calling me,” he said, trying to sound brave. “What do you want?”
For a few seconds, there was only static.
Then the whisper returned—clearer now.
“Don’t forget… tomorrow.”
The line went dead again.
Ethan felt uneasy the entire night. He barely slept. The next morning, as he got ready for work, he kept thinking about the message.
Tomorrow.
But tomorrow was today.
He checked his calendar. Nothing special—just another normal Wednesday. He grabbed his keys, locked the door, and headed to the elevator.
As the elevator doors opened, he noticed a small sign taped to the wall.
“Building Maintenance: Elevator Inspection Today. Use Stairs.”
Ethan froze.
He suddenly remembered something: every morning, he always rushed into the elevator without looking at notices. If the phone hadn’t kept him awake and made him more alert, he might have stepped inside without thinking.
A loud noise echoed from the elevator shaft—metal clanging, followed by a shout from a worker below.
“Good thing no one was in there!” someone yelled.
Ethan’s hands started to shake.
Later that night, he sat quietly in his apartment, staring at his phone. The clock slowly reached midnight.
11:59 p.m.
He held his breath.
12:00 a.m.
Silence.
No ringing. No whisper.
The phone never called again.
To this day, Ethan doesn’t know who—or what—warned him. But every time he sees a safety sign, he reads it carefully.
Because sometimes, a small reminder can save your life.
