Fanatic

When people in the town of Ash Hollow spoke about Black Briar House, they lowered their voices without realizing it.

Not because they believed in ghosts.

Because the house had a habit of making believers.

It stood alone beyond the tree line, where the forest swallowed the old road. Its windows were dark, its roof sagging beneath decades of rain, yet no vines climbed its walls. Nothing grew close to it. Even the crows avoided landing on the chimney.

The locals had dozens of stories.

Some claimed lights drifted through its halls every November.

Others said if you knocked on the front door after midnight, someone would knock back.

But the oldest residents told only one story.

"The house remembers everyone who enters."
Nobody knew what that meant.

Until five friends decided to find out.

Ethan was filming before they even parked.

"This is perfect," he grinned, pointing his camera toward the mansion. "Millions of views."

Sophia rolled her eyes.

"You've said that before every abandoned building we've visited."

"And I've been right twice."

Lucas shut off the engine.

"We go in, look around for an hour, and leave."

Maya frowned at the enormous structure disappearing into the fog.

"I hate this already."

Jordan laughed.

"You're scared of everything."

"I'm scared of things that deserve it."

The front gate stood open.

Nobody had touched it in years.

It still swung gently.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

Though there wasn't any wind.

The front door opened before they reached it.

Not by much.

Just enough to reveal darkness inside.

Nobody admitted seeing it move.

They simply stared.

Lucas forced a laugh.

"Old hinges."

No one answered.

The air smelled strange.

Not like mold.

Not like dust.

It smelled...

occupied.

Inside, silence wrapped around them.

The house wasn't empty.

It breathed.

Tiny creaks echoed overhead.

Wood expanded.

Floorboards sighed.

Somewhere upstairs...

a chair scraped across the floor.

Everyone froze.

Ethan smiled into the camera.

"Probably raccoons."

The scraping stopped.

Then—

Three slow footsteps.

Above them.

Walking across the ceiling.

"Nope," Maya whispered.

"We're leaving."

Jordan shined his flashlight upward.

"Relax."

Another step.

Another.

Another.

Then something heavy ran across the second floor.

Every door upstairs slammed shut simultaneously.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

The sound echoed through every hallway.

Sophia jumped.

Lucas whispered,

"...Okay."

The dining room still contained plates.

Silverware.

Glasses.

A dinner frozen in time.

Except...

Every plate was clean.

Not dusty.

Perfectly clean.

As if someone had eaten there yesterday.

Ethan touched a wine glass.

Still warm.

He jerked his hand away.

"Guys..."

No one had an explanation.

They found the family portraits in the hallway.

At first they seemed ordinary.

Victorian clothing.

Serious expressions.

Parents.

Children.

Grandparents.

Then Maya noticed something.

"There are five kids."

"So?"

"There were four a second ago."

Everyone looked.

Silence.

Lucas laughed nervously.

"Memory's weird."

Maya wasn't convinced.

She counted again.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

The smallest child stood at the edge of the painting.

Smiling.

No one remembered seeing him before.

Their flashlights began flickering.

Fresh batteries.

Every one of them.

Sophia checked her phone.

"No signal."

Jordan looked at his.

"The time isn't moving."

It was 12:17.

One minute later...

Still 12:17.

Ethan swallowed.

"This isn't funny."

Nobody had made a joke.

The basement door stood open.

They were certain it had been closed.

Cold air drifted upward.

A whisper floated with it.

"...help..."

Maya stepped backward.

"Did you hear that?"

Another whisper.

Closer.

"...please..."

Lucas called down.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then—

A child laughed.

They should have left then.

Instead...

They went downstairs.

The basement stretched far beyond the size of the house.

Rows of narrow hallways disappeared into darkness.

Impossible.

Black Briar House couldn't be that large.

The floor became damp.

Not water.

Something thicker.

The smell of iron filled the air.

Jordan aimed his flashlight downward.

Footprints.

Hundreds of them.

Bare feet.

All leading deeper underground.

None leading back.

A little girl stood at the end of the corridor.

White dress.

Barefoot.

Hair covering her face.

She wasn't moving.

Sophia whispered,

"Is that... someone?"

Ethan lifted the camera.

The screen showed an empty hallway.

He lowered it.

The girl was still there.

He raised it again.

Nothing.

Lowered it.

There.

Watching.

She slowly raised one finger...

...and pointed behind them.

Everyone turned.

Nothing.

When they looked back...

She was gone.

Something breathed directly into Ethan's ear.

He spun around.

No one.

His camera hit the floor.

The cracked screen flickered to life.

It wasn't recording live.

It was showing footage from earlier that evening.

The five of them walked toward the house.

Except...

There were six people.

A tall, impossibly thin figure walked just behind them from the very beginning.

None of them had noticed.

Jordan screamed.

Not because of the video.

Because Ethan's shadow...

was moving by itself.

The shadow slowly lifted one arm.

Ethan hadn't moved.

The shadow smiled.

Ethan didn't.

Then the shadow peeled itself away from the floor...

...and walked into the darkness.

Leaving Ethan without one.

Every flashlight died.

Darkness swallowed them whole.

Something shuffled just beyond reach.

Bare feet.

Dragging.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Then hundreds.

The whispers returned.

Not from one direction.

From every direction.

Inside the walls.

Under the floor.

Above the ceiling.

Inside their own heads.

"...stay..."

"...don't leave..."

"...remember us..."

"...join us..."

The house itself began to groan.

As if waking from a very long sleep.

Lucas finally spotted the staircase.

"RUN!"

They sprinted.

The footsteps followed.

Not behind them.

Beside them.

Above them.

Inside the walls.

The ceiling cracked.

Doors burst open on their own.

Portraits turned to watch them.

Every painted face smiled.

The front door slammed shut.

Lucas threw his shoulder into it once.

Twice.

Three times.

The fourth hit shattered the old lock.

The five friends stumbled into the cold morning air.

Sunlight flooded the porch.

The whispers stopped.

The house stood perfectly still.

Silent.

Patient.

As if it knew something they didn't.

Months passed.

None of them ever spoke about Black Briar House.

Ethan's footage was corrupted.

Every video became static.

Every photograph came out blank.

No one believed their story.

Life slowly returned to normal.

Until the nightmares began.

Ethan noticed his family portrait had changed.

There were six people now.

His parents.

His sister.

His dog.

Him.

And behind them...

A tall figure with no face.

Only Ethan could see it.

Every morning it stood a little closer.

Lucas heard footsteps in his attic.

Every night.

Exactly three.

No more.

No less.

One night he climbed the ladder.

The attic was empty.

Except for fresh footprints in the dust.

They ended directly behind where he had been standing.

Sophia woke to find mud covering her feet.

Her bedroom door had been locked from the inside.

Outside her window stretched a trail of barefoot footprints leading into the woods.

They were her size.

She couldn't remember leaving the house.

Jordan began forgetting people.

His neighbor disappeared from his memory.

Then an old teacher.

Then his uncle.

Every photograph they had ever appeared in changed.

It was as though they had never existed.

Eventually he found himself staring at pictures of five strangers.

He recognized their faces.

But couldn't remember their names.

Maya stopped looking into mirrors after sunset.

Because one evening...

Her reflection blinked.

She hadn't.

The next night...

It smiled.

She hadn't.
On the third night...
Her reflection whispered:
"We're almost home."

One year later, another group of explorers drove down the abandoned road toward Black Briar House.
"This place is creepy," one of them muttered.
The front gate swung gently.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
Though the air was perfectly still.
The front door opened before they reached it.
Just enough to invite them inside.
They laughed nervously and stepped into the entrance hall.
The walls were covered with family portraits.
One teenager frowned.
"That's weird."
"What?"
"There are ten people in this painting."
The others looked.
An old Victorian family stood in the center.
Smiling
Around them stood five younger faces.
Modern clothes.
Pale skin.
Empty eyes.
Ethan.
Sophia.
Lucas.
Jordan.
Maya.
Each wore the same frozen smile.
Each stared directly out of the canvas.
As if waiting.
As if recognizing the newcomers.
The smallest painted child slowly lifted one hand.
And waved.
Behind the teenagers...
The front door closed by itself.
The lock clicked.
Somewhere deep inside the house...
A chair scraped across the floor.
Three footsteps echoed overhead.
And Black Briar House remembered five more names.
