The Other Room (proof of life and tackling with softer sensual stories)

The laughter from the living room rolled down the hallway, warm and bright, but Elena could barely hear it. Every sound seemed muffled by the pulse in her ears — or maybe by the way Daniel was looking at her.

They’d slipped away under the excuse of finding more wine. It wasn’t a lie, not entirely. The half-empty bottle still rested on the counter between them, forgotten.

“Everyone’s going to wonder where we are,” Daniel murmured, voice low enough to vibrate against her skin.

She smiled, tracing the rim of the bottle with her fingertip. “Then we shouldn’t be gone long.”

But neither moved. The air between them stretched thin — charged, alive. The dim kitchen light painted gold along his jawline, caught in the rhythm of his breath.

Elena took a step closer, her hand brushing his sleeve. A spark. The kind that could light a fuse.

He inhaled sharply, but didn’t pull away. “Elena—”

“I know,” she whispered. “We can’t.”

Yet her voice trembled in a way that said she already had.

Outside, laughter rose again — louder this time, pulling them both back for a heartbeat. Then it faded, leaving only the quiet hum of the refrigerator and the unspoken truth between them.

For now, the door stayed open. But the air was thick with promise — the kind that could turn a single glance into a secret neither of them would ever forget.
